We have another super easy & quick Halloween craft for you! This craft was inspired by the Sharpie Mug that has been floating around Pinterest for the past few months. There seem to be a lot of mixed reviews on this craft, some saying it worked great and others claiming it did not work at all. From my own experience, this definitely does work there are just a few tips and tricks you must be weary of.For those of you who don’t know what the Sharpie Mug craft is, I shal
l explain. Basically, what you do is draw a design on a ceramic mug (or dish or bowl) and then bake it in the oven to set the design. It seems that using an actual sharpie (unless it is oil-based) is not the best option for this craft. Instead you need an oil based marker. I bought this set of Bic and it seems to work great, except the lighter colors fade in the oven.
Now, onto what we do for our Halloween plates. I had a stack of plain white plates leftover from a previous project that I thought would be perfect to put some fun Halloween designs on. With a quick Google image search of a crow outline and a rat outline, I printed out my favorite images sized to fit the center of the plate. I cut out the design and then taped it to the center of the plate.
Next, using the color I wanted the design to be I traced around it. If you are nervous about making a mistake or unsure what the design will look like you can use a lighter color to trace around it because it will fade off in the oven and it is easier to cover up with a darker color. After I outlined the image cutout, I colored it in.
After 24 hours I put the plates in the oven at 350ºF and then set a timer for 30 minutes. Do not preheat the oven before putting your plates in! You need the plate to adjust to the changing temperature, otherwise it will crack. After 30 minutes turn the oven off but keep the plates in the oven so they can cool off with the oven. Once the oven is cooled you may take out your plates.
To preserve the design, these plates are best washed using a non-abrasive sponge, and I would definitely recommend not putting them in the dishwasher.
Although there seems to be some mixed reviews on this craft, it seems to have worked great for me both times I did it. Plus, for a Halloween or Holiday craft perhaps you don’t necessarily need the design to be permanent. Plus you can always re-draw over your design and bake it again to touch it up if you have to.
This craft is super easy and does not involve very many supplies. It will add a fun and spooky element to your Halloween. Plus, you can display them a number of different ways. You could put the food you are serving on them or simply hang them up on the wall. Get creative!
