August Favorites

Oh, okay, Summer I see what you have done there. You have done and gone straight to Fall. I guess I can be okay with this. I GUESS. So long as you promise to explode with pumpkin flavored everything (candles I’m eyeing you) and plaid styled clothing and lets not forget Halloween decorations galore. Can y’all believe August is over?? This summer flew by. I mean FLEW. Holy cow where does time go? Okay grandma stop ranting and get along with the post… If you couldn’t tell from the title we are here to talk about our goodbye to summer forever August favorites.

Princess taking over my parents bed... as per usual

Princess taking over my parents bed… as per usual

Home: Little miss Olive. We went home to NH in August and I got to see my giant horse of a dog. She hasn’t changed much.. still deathly afraid of the vacuum cleaner, still jumps (jump is a bit of a stretch..) onto your bed and takes up the whole thing if you leave your door open for one second, still begs for food by resting her head on our kitchen table (yes she is tall enough to do this. Oh how I’ve missed all her silly dogerisms.

Succulents

Some of our new succulents and some of our old ones that were taking over… pinky I’m talking about you

Also in home – new succulents! We bought some new succulents to add to our home when we were at Ikea (they have some awesome succulents) and also took the opportunity to re-pot some of our old ones that were taking over. Rose likes to propagate succulents by taking a leaf that has fallen off or plucking one off as long as it has visible roots and planting it in a new pot. She’s been doing it to all of our succulents so we shall see what grows.

Fitness Blender home pageWorkouts: Okay this might be an odd one but Rose and I both love (well as much as you can love a workout) using Fitness Blender for our daily workouts. They have easy to hard to my legs are going to fall off if I have to do another jump squat hard workouts that you can choose from. You can also choose how long you want your workout to be, which is great for me when I try and wake up early and workout. If you haven’t checked them out you should!

Me before you book coverBooks: As Rose mentioned in our June favorites, she read and loved Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. Welp, you guessed it, I finally read it and lovedddd it too. From the description of the book I was kinda like ehh but once I read the first few pages I was hooked and whizzed through the whole thing.

The Nightingale book coverAnd while I was reading Rose’s recommendation she finally read mine and loveddd The Nightingale. Since we haven’t quite figured out how to share Kindle books we just literally swapped Kindles for the month.

Boyhood movie coverMovies: Boyhood. I know this movie has been out for a while but we finally got around to watching it and both loved it. The boy in it legit has the same voice/mannerisms/thoughts as my brother so it was amusing to watch for me and only slightly creepy. Regardless, go watch this and not be creeped out because you don’t know who my brother is.

Unreal_CandyCoatedMCFood: Unreal chocolate coated candy. Umm because it is too easy and I have to… these chocolates are UNREAL. But seriously these chocolates are sosoosoo good. Plus they are made with 100% real ingredients so you don’t feel bad when you go and accidently eat the whole bag in one sitting. Check them out – they make all sorts of different flavors and candies. We bought ours at Whole Foods.

DIY Color Block and Ombre Wooden Pencils

DIY Painted Wooden PencilsBack to school. Yes. It is coming. For you. Or it already has?? Going back to school was always about 75% scary/stressful/no don’t make me go and 25% exciting/yay I get to see my friends/have something to do other than Netflix. At least that’s how I saw going back to school each year. It seems to get more stressful the older you got, especially once you were in college and had to deal with physically moving all your stuff. I do not miss those parts of going back to school, but I do miss certain things that I don’t get now that I am working and out of school (for now).

Color Blocked and Ombre painted wooden pencils perfect for back to school

One of those things I do miss is being able to buy all new school supplies before the academic year starts. In grade school you would get a list sent to you with everything you might need, including things such as crayons! Crayons! My mom would load us all up in the car and take us to Staples to pick out new binders, folders, pens, pencils, and anything else we might think we would need.

DIY Painted Wooden Pencils

We would roam the aisles looking for our favorite colored binder or the assignment book that had the best cover. Everything was so shiny and new and smelled like office supplies. It made me maybe an extra 10% more excited to start the school year.

DIY Painted Wooden Pencils

We thought we would share this simple painted wooden pencil DIY with you all to get you eager about the approaching school year, or to just keep in your office or at home for pretty decoration/use. This DIY adds a fun flare to the regular yellow number 2 pencil so you can write in style. Plus, it is completely customizable so you can decorate your pencils to your binders, notebooks, even your outfit! It’s all up to you!

What you will need:

  • Different colors of acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Water cup
  • Scotch blue painters tape

DIY Ombre Painted Wooden Pencils

Ombre: To ombre the pencils we used a color (such as pink, blue, or green) and white paint. We squirted out some of the color and then started to paint the top of the pencil with that color. Once we were about a third of the way down the pencil we mixed the color with a little bit of white to get that faded effect and painted that onto the pencil, blending it a little with the previous color. We kept adding more white to the color to get the shade lighter and lighter and added that onto the pencil. Once you are happy with the results leave the pencil to dry completely before using.

DIY Painted Wooden Pencils

You can also fade or ombre two colors together as we did with this blue and green. Just start with the blue at one end and the green at the other and use the same lightening trick by adding white paint to each. Once you are in the middle just blend the two colors together so it looks coherent. This may take a few tries or a few coats but be patient and it’ll look awesome!

DIY Color Block Painted Wooden Pencils

Color block: To color block the pencil we used painters tape to mark off the edges of each stripe. For the first stripe you can just put the tape however far along the pencil you want your first color to be. Then paint it in! We did two coats because we wanted it to be more opaque. Let dry completely before taking the tape off, otherwise the paint will rip off or smudge. For the second stripe, use the tape to block off the end of the first stripe. You’ll need the first stripe to be completely dry before putting tape over it or you’ll peal the paint off when you peal the tape up. Also put tape on the pencil where you want the second stripe to end.  Paint the part in between the tape and continue taping/painting for however many stripes you want!

We played around with different styles of painting the wooden pencils and liked the ombre effect and the color block effect the best, but feel free to take the creative reigns on this project and paint whatever inspires you! Both of these methods were really easy to do and we had a lot of fun making them; it got us in the mood to pack up our stuff and make a visit back to Skidmore College!

What We Ate 8/17/15 – 8/22/15

Hey everyone! Just sharing our delicious eats we had for dinner last week. I have to start to figure out what we want to make next week as well. If you have any suggestions comment below!

BBQ chicken Asian salad

Monday: Chopped Asian BBQ Chicken Salad from Half Baked Harvest. We absolutely love this salad! We’ve made it a couple of times before and I always forget how simple and quick it all comes together. Those tortilla chips are sooo good.

Cauliflower rice and sweet potatoes

Tuesday: Spicy Cauliflower Rice, Cinnamon-Paprika Sweet Potatoes & Avocado Mash from Blissful Basil. We recently got into making cauliflower rice and have been trying out different recipes that involve it. This one was simple oh so delicious. The sweet potatoes were probably my favorite part!

Peach pizza

Peach pizza and salad

Wednesday: Peach Pizza with a side salad. This is our go to pizza recipe in the summer – it is refreshing and light. I can’t get enough peaches! Yum!

Thursday: Leftover Cauliflower Rice with Cinnamon-Paprika Sweet Potatoes. Still good leftover!

Friday: Leftover Peach Pizza. It’s Friday so we had to have some pizza to ring in the weekend!

Saturday: Takeout – we were out and about running errands so we grabbed some quick food to go.

What We Ate 8/2/15 – 8/8/15

Hello my friends! This past week has been pretty low-key for us; nothing too exciting going on now. We were back in Cape Cod the previous weekend and are headed to New Hampshire to visit my family this upcoming weekend. It has been a busy summer but a great one so far! I can’t believe it is already August and stores are putting out all their back to school stuff. I also can’t believe I haven’t been in the back to school rush for 2 years now. These years after graduation really fly by! At least we have good food to enjoy them!

Egg dinner

Sunday: Breakfast for dinner. We had just driven home and didn’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking up dinner so we threw together some scrambled eggs and steamed veggies. I always love eggs for dinner for something quick and easy.

Vegan creamy pasta with veggies

Monday: Easy Vegan Alfredo by the Minimalist Baker. We were craving some cheesy pasta but since Rose has recently decided she thinks she is lactose intolerant we skipped the cheese and made a vegan alfredo instead. The recipe was good and we of course added some veggies to ours because that’s what we love to do!

Vegetables

Spring rolls

Spring roll

Tuesday: Spring Rolls with Carrot-Ginger Dipping Sauce from Martha Stewart. We tried a new spring roll recipe and this one did not disappoint! Something about the summer just makes me want fresh raw veggies. The carrot-ginger sauce was messy but oh so good.

Wednesday: Leftover pasta!

sweet potato falafel

Thursday: Sweet Potato Falafel Pitas from Sweat Peas and Saffron. These falafels came out so well. I love sweet potatoes in pretty much anything so I was dying to try this recipe and I’m so glad we did. It was delicious and we now have plenty of leftover falafels for the week!

Friday: Leftover falafels- yum yum!

Zucchini bread pancakes

Saturday: Vegan Zucchini Bread Pancakes by The Vegan and The Chef. Apparently breakfast for dinner was the theme for this week because we couldn’t resist making these scrumptious pancakes after I saw the recipe online. I know zucchini pancakes might sound a bit odd but you must try these they are so delicious! Caroline also has a beet pancake recipe that we are going to try next.

At Home Mini S’more Bites

Banana mini s'mores

Happy National S’mores day!!! Now this is a holiday worth celebrating! There is just something so perfect about a burnt marshmallow stuck between two graham crackers and some melted chocolate. However when you don’t have a fire handy to melt said marshmallows, things can get a bit tricky.
S'moresHave no fear though! We are here to share an at home s’mores version that only takes about 5 minutes and a microwave. We are going to keep it simple and sweet (just like the s’mores) and show you our mini at home s’mores.

IMG_7138

For the base of the s’more we used sliced banana. Next we took some melted chocolate and spread it onto the banana round. We added a marshmallow cut in half on top of that and then drizzled it all with chocolate and some graham cracker crumbs. Pop in the freezer for a couple of minutes for the chocolate to harden. And viola at home s’mores that don’t require making a fire or too much of a mess (until you eat them!)

Mini s'mores

We got a little creative and added other things into the s’mores, such as peanut butter, coconut, and toffee bits. It’s all up to what you are craving! I hope you have a great National s’mores day and get to eat some s’mores in some form or another!

Watermelon Mint Mojito

Watermelon mint mojito

As Queen B so nicely put it in her Drunk in Love song, I’ve been drinking watermelon. I don’t quite know what Beyonce was referring to when she said she has been drinking watermelon (should I know these things?), but we have created our own watermelon drink to get drunk in love off of.

Watermelon mojito

This alcoholic drink is light, summery, refreshing, and packs a lot of flavor for just a few ingredients. Plus, it doesn’t require any fancy shmancy tools (hello make-shift wooden spoon muddler), which means you can enjoy it at your beach house this summer vacation, which is exactly what we plan to do!

IMG_7059

We’ve been sipping on this classic mojito with a twist for the past few weeks, so much so that we had to feature it in our June favorites. Once you splurge for a whole bunch of mint at the food store then you have no excuse but to make this drink every single night until you run out of mint.. or limes.. or watermelon.

Watermelon mojito

Funny lime story that is slightly off-topic but I will share anyways. When we were buying ingredients for this we were at Whole Foods and looking for limes, but the only ones we could find were wicked expensive and hello I know limes should only be like 50 cents but we really needed them so we carried them around the store for a few minutes until we decided to drop everything and go to a different grocery store for cheaper limes #firstjobproblems. Well we got some more reasonable priced limes at Trader Joe’s and were happy about that and brought them home and then once we opened up the bag there was a huge moldy lime sitting there like it was king of the jungle or something. Ew. We couldn’t use those for our precious mojitos! 3 grocery stores later and we finally had a useable bag of limes. That was our limescapade.

Lime and mint

And now back to the drink at hand, our wonderful watermelon mint mojito! What you need for this delicious cocktail other than limes is mint, watermelon (duh!), white rum, seltzer, and some raw sugar (we prefer turbinado sugar).

Mojito

To make 1 cocktail:

  • 3-4 mint leaves
  • 1/2 lime cut into wedges
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (or more to taste)
  • 4 watermelon cubes
  • 1 shot of rum
  • 1 cup of seltzer

1. Muddle in the bottom of your cup the mint, lime, and sugar.

Muddle mint

2. We don’t own a muddler so we improvised and use the handle of a wooden spoon, which actually worked wonders. The key is to press the oils and minty flavor out of the mint without really tearing it up. Once those ingredients are muddled together, add in the watermelon and gently mash that a few times, but not too much.

Watermelon mojito

3. Add the rum and the seltzer, give it a nice stir and enjoy!

Watermelon mojito

And there you have it, the I’ve been drinking watermelon mint mojito. Perfect for any summer night to cool you down.

Follow us around – Mount Auburn Cemetery

View from Washington Tower at Mount Auburn Cemetery

A few weekends ago we decided to take a walk up to the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. We had wanted to do this for a while and since it was such a nice day out we decided to just get up and go. We live about a mile away so we just walked over there. The Mount Auburn Cemetery was the first rural cemetery in the U.S., and it is not only a cemetery but also an arboretum and has all these cool trees and wildlife.

Boston skyline

Washington Tower Mount Auburn Cemetery

We didn’t take too many pictures in there but I will share the few that we did. We climbed up the Washington Tower to see these beautiful views of Boston. The tower is apparently 62-feet high and allowed you to see a panoramic view of Mass. Rose was a little nervous so she stayed towards the center of the tower while I ventured out to take some pictures. Don’t mind the grubby workout clothes – it was really hot out!

Haley Mount Auburn Cemetery

Rose Washington TowerAfter going up the Washington Tower we walked through the cemetery a bit. Funny story – we were stopped by the patrol and almost asked to leave because you have to be at least 14 years old to be in there without an adult. Side note – we are both 23 years old.

Tree in Mount Auburn Cemetery

Tree in Mount Auburn Cemetery

We found this one massive droopy tree that was just so funny and blob-like we had to stop and take some pictures of it. It was huge! (and hard to fit the whole thing in one picture…) We also saw a lot of wild turkeys.. like a lot a lot!

We highly recommend checking out the Mount Auburn Cemetery if you live in or near Boston. It was nice to walk around and be in nature, plus the views from the Washington Tower were amazing. We hope you enjoyed our little mini adventure to the cemetery. Please don’t mind our iPhone pictures – we are still learning!
