Glass Etching DIY

IMG_1527Ever wonder what to do with all those glass containers leftover from the huge bunch of Bath and Body Works candles you bought? Well we have a fun and simple DIY for you! All you need is a cleaned out glass candle holder (or anything made of glass you want to etch on), some glass etching cream, a paintbrush, and some letters or a stencil of some sort. We like candles in this household, and tend to go a little crazy whenever there is a big sale going on at Bath and Body Works (especially when the season changes – we are currently resisting the urge to stock up on the fall scents at the moment. It’s hard to resist Pumpkin Caramel Latte!). But we would burn through the candles and not know what to do with the jars afterwards. We had an etching kit from Darby Smart lying around and decided to etch onto the glass once the candle was gone. This got our creative juices flowing and soon we were using painters tape and stencil punch outs to make fun designs. Here are some of the candles we have etched.

IMG_1521 IMG_1533 IMG_1520

This craft is rather simple and a lot of fun once you peel off all the letters and see your design revealed. The first thing you’d want to do is clear out that extra bit of wax from the bottom of the jar. This is surprisingly easy. All you need to do is pour boiling water into the candle and let it sit, the wax will eventually float to the top. This sometimes takes a few rounds of boiling water for the bigger candles. It also helps to cut up the wax with a knife at the bottom so it can more easily float up. Make sure to dump the used water out outside or in a safe container, as it will clog up your drain. Another method you can use to clean out the wax is to put the candle in the freezer. We used the boiling water method, but we have heard freezing it works just as well. Once all the wax is out we like to soak the candle in soap and hot water so the stickers peel off. We also scrub the glass well with a sponge to get rid of any lasting wax residue. And that’s it! Now you have a nice cleaned out jar!

On to the etching, which is also very easy and only a tad bit messy.

Supplies you will need:

IMG_1495

– Glass container

– Glass etching cream – we used Martha Stewart Crafts brand

– Paint brush

– Letter stickers – we used these from the Darby Smart kit, but you could use any vinyl sticky letters! Comment if you find good ones somewhere.

Steps:

1. Start with a clean glass surface. Place down the letters where you want them and make sure they are secure.

IMG_1506 IMG_1507

2. Get your paint brush full of etching cream and carefully paint inside your letters. This can get tricky trying to stay within the lines of the letters because you do need a lot of the cream, but just do the best you can and if you mess up we won’t tell anyone! Anywhere the etching cream goes, it will etch, so if you do mess up and you’re upset with it, just try to wipe it up with a paper towel as quickly as possible.

IMG_1510 IMG_1511

3. Let the cream dry for at least 15 minutes, but if you have more time, let it sit longer.

IMG_1509 IMG_1512

4. After 15 minutes, bring the jar over to the sink and rinse off the cream with soap and water.

IMG_1534

5. Peel off the letters and voila! Biso biso means kiss kiss in french, so Haley made this one for a lipstick holder! Such a cute idea!

IMG_1538 IMG_1540 IMG_1553

Like all crafts we do, we got really into these and tried other designs and methods. For the stars and flowers you will need some painters tape and a stencil punch-out in addition to the other supplies mentioned above. Tear off a piece of the painters tape and then punch out the stencil design. You can either use the inside or the surrounding design and stick it to the glass. Do this as many times as you like to cover your jar. Follow the same steps (2-5) as above to apply the etching cream and let it set.

IMG_1550IMG_1544 IMG_1545 IMG_1547 IMG_1548

We hope you enjoyed our etching DIY! It’s been fun to etch random glass jars we find lying around. Also, we have started going to the candle sections in stores and buying candles less for their scent and more for their cool jars. Haha.. crafter habits. Let us know if you tried this craft and what you etched!

Goodbye Summer Panzanella

Why does it always feel like summer flies by? This summer was a busy one, we graduated college, started new jobs, and moved into a new apartment. It feels like everything just happened in the blink of an eye and we didn’t even get a moment to enjoy the nice weather. We have gotten to enjoy other perks of summer though, like buying fresh produce at the local farmers market and eating lots and lots of ice cream on hot nights when nothing else could possibly do. This summer will definitely be memorable and so as a, perhaps a bit early, send off to summer we created a Goodbye Summer Panzanella.

IMG_1905
We love panzanellas – they are quick, yummy, and who doesn’t love a bunch of bread masquerading as a salad? They are a good alternative to a lettuce salad too. In case any of you were wondering what a panzanella is, Wiki tells me it is a Tuscan salad that includes soaked and stale bread, lots of tomatoes, and is dressed with oil and balsamic vinegar. Yum! Our love for panzanellas started instantaneously after we made our first one junior year of college. We just followed a simple, basic panzanella recipe, and boy did it come out great! Since then we have tried different versions of panzanellas. Most recently, we have made this Blueberry Turkey Panzanella Salad by Teaspoon of Spice, which inspired our Goodbye Summer Panzanella.

IMG_1859

Ingredients

– Slightly stale small baguette, we also like to use stuffing croutons

– 1-1.5 cups of cherry tomatoes

– 1 zucchini

-1/2 lb chicken tenderloins (marinated in oil and vinegar for at least 30 minutes)

1/2 baguette

– Blueberries to top

For the Dressing:*

-2/3 cup blueberries

-3 Tablespoons coconut oil (virgin or extra virgin)

-1 Tablespoon red wine (or white)

-2 Tablespoons lemon juice

-salt and pepper to taste

*add water if you want the dressing to be more liquidy. We kept it more on the thick side.

Directions:

1) Marinate the chicken for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours.

2) Once chicken is ready to cook, put it in a skillet on medium heat. Cook for about 5 minutes on a side or until done.

IMG_1821

3) Dice up the zucchini and put it in a second skillet with about 1/2 Tablespoon of coconut oil.

IMG_1827 IMG_1828

4) While the chicken and zucchini cook, chop the bread into strips. When the zucchini is almost tender, put the bread into the skillet with the zucchini

IMG_18355) Slice cherry tomatoes in half, add them to the bread and zucchini skillet. Salt and pepper to taste.IMG_1839 IMG_1859

6) This is a good time to make the dressing. To do this, toss all the dressing ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

IMG_1875 IMG_1902

7) Once chicken is done, slice it up or shred it and add it to the veggie and bread skillet.IMG_1864

8) Add about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the dressing to the skillet and toss it around. Turn the heat down to low and let the flavors combine for about 2 minutes.

IMG_1880 IMG_18999) Eat and enjoy!

Clothespin DIY

IMG_1474Hello!

Today we are going to share a DIY with you all! We thought we would deviate a bit from all the food posts we have started out with. This is a fun and simple DIY that you can do mindlessly do while you watch TV or listen to music. We desperately needed chip clips in the Popcorn and Chocolate household, but whenever we went out in hopes to buy some, none of them were pretty enough for our liking. So instead we scoured pinterest (as per usual) and found some fun ways to make your own chip clips. We went out and bought a box of clothespins and then used what supplies we had at home. Now since we are a crafting household, we already had many of these supplies on hand, but you might need to make a trip to your local craft store to pick some goodies up!

IMG_1473 IMG_1481This craft is a lot of fun and you can decorate your clothespins in a variety of ways. We are going to show you two different methods we enjoyed by using washi tape and stamps. We also have several pictures of how we decorated using paint and nail polish, the possibilities are endless!

IMG_1483

Supplies:
– Wooden clothespins

– Washi tape

– Small stamps and an ink pad

Other supplies you could use: stencils, sharpies, paint, nail polish, craft paper, etc!

IMG_1478For the washi tape clothespins: start at the top of the clothespins and wrap a piece of washi around it so all the sides are covered. Trim any excess tape you have with scissors and make sure everything is securely taped down. Do this same thing on the next section, overlapping the first just a tiny bit. Keep doing this all the way down the clothespin. Some places can get tricky due to the wire, sometimes it is helpful to trim off small pieces of washi and put them around the wire edges. Or, if you are like us and get frustrated easily, it’s best to just cover what you can and move on. If the tape is not sticking very well, or if you just want to make sure it will last for a while, we would suggest to modge podge the whole thing with a light layer. This really helped on the tricky places to get the tape to stick better.

IMG_1490 IMG_1491 IMG_1492 IMG_1493

For the stamp clothespins: This one is pretty self explanatory. All you need to do is figure out what design you want and then start stamping! We used these little letter stamps we bought at A.C. Moore. They work perfectly if you want to write something sweet. We also recently purchased this set of stamps from Papersource, that although were a bit expensive for what they are, they work nicely on these clothespins because they are so tiny.

IMG_1485 IMG_1487 IMG_1488Other ways to decorate:

– Use a stencil and paint or sharpie a fun design

– Marble nail polish in water and run the clothespin through it (DIY on marbling to come!)

– Take some craft paper or any paper you enjoy and Modge Podge it to the clothespin and cut off any excess. You can also do the same with ribbon.

IMG_1475

We hope you enjoyed our DIY clothespin post! It is a deviation away from the food, but hopefully it was a good deviation. We certainly love our crafts as well as food. We would love to hear what you guys decided to try out with your clothespins!

Date Brownies

IMG_1455Oh yum you guys, these brownies are delicious, and dare I say healthy! Plus plus, they do not require any baking. So on hot August days like the weather has graced us with recently, you can still enjoy a yummy treat without making your apartment 20 degrees hotter. We followed Nosh and Nourish‘s recipe for No Bake Samoa Bars but changed a few ingredients to what we had in our kitchen. These could not have been simpler or more delicious. Haley hadn’t even had a date until a few weeks ago, you can’t even tell that they are mostly made out of dates. Yum!

Here is what you will need:

IMG_1344

– 1.5 cups pitted dates

– 1 cup pecans

– 1/2 cup coconut flakes

– 1 cup cocoa powder

– 3 tablespoons coconut oil

– 3 tablespoons honey

– 3 tablespoons sugar

– Added goodies: toffee bits or chocolate chips, coconut milk whipped cream

IMG_1424 IMG_1426 IMG_1430

Directions:

1. In a food processor combine all the ingredients and blend until the mixture is even. Since we have a small food processor we blended the ingredients as we added them and then realized it wasn’t going to all fit in one batch and had to divide the mixture in half. If you have a 3 cup food processor, we’d recommend starting by adding half of all the ingredients, blending, and then doing the other half.IMG_14332. Pour mixture into a 9×9 (or closest size you have) pan – since it doesn’t have to bake, the size doesn’t matter too much

3. Press in any added goodies like toffee bits or chocolate chips

IMG_1444IMG_1446

4. Refrigerate for one hour

5. Enjoy with some coconut milk whipped cream and fresh fruit!IMG_1453

IMG_1456

You have to try these brownies – they are too good to pass up! We are planning on making another batch with some almond butter mixed in next!

We swear this blog isn’t only food… we just like to cook..and eat! We are working on some other non-food content so just bare with us for now us we are learning the ropes.

Quick and Simple Chicken and Peach Pizza

Happy weekend all!

Tonight we were running (literally – we went for a late night run before dinner) late on dinner and needed something quick and easy to make. We already had a frozen pizza crust from Trader Joe’s in our freezer and since it was Friday night, naturally we thought of pizza. This pizza is very adaptable to what you are craving and how much time you want to spend on cooking. Since it was late and we were both hungry after our run, we hopped to the grocery store and grabbed a peach, pre-cooked chicken, and some mozzarella cheese. Once home we turned on the oven to preheat and then started to assemble the pizza. Since the chicken was already cooked, this took no time at all, and we were able to get the pizza in the oven right away. While the pizza was cooking we made some salads, topped with more peach, tomatoes, pepper, blueberries and oil and balsamic vinegar. It was a delicious, quick, and pretty healthy meal. This has definitely become a go to meal for us. Try it yourself and add any toppings you want!

IMG_1362

Ingredients:
– Frozen pizza crust – we used Trader Joe’s frozen organic pizza crusts, but anything works. We recently discovered this crust and love love love it! But feel free to make your own crust or use a gluten free one.

– Mozzarella

– Yellow peach

– Chicken – either pre-cooked chicken or cook your own

– Pizza sauce – normally we don’t use pizza sauce on this pizza but we had it in our fridge and decided to add it and it was really good.

IMG_1391

Directions:

1. Pre-heat oven per the pizza crust package’s instruction.

2. If using pizza sauce, spread sauce on top of the crust. Add mozzarella, peaches, chicken, and anything else you want!

3. Pop pizza in oven for however long the crust directions say (typically about 10 minutes)

4. Enjoy! Add a side salad to get some more veggies in your meal! Also, sometimes we make this without sauce and just put balsamic vinegar on top! Or sauce and vinegar… whatever sounds good.IMG_1398 IMG_1404 IMG_1411

Our first acai bowls

Have you tasted the deliciousness of an acai bowl? Haley has been wanting to try acai bowls for a while now so we decided to make some last week. Well before we could actually make them we went on a wild goose chase trying to find out where they sell frozen acai smoothie packs in Boston. We found them at our local Whole Foods and wiped them out of stock. On our first attempt, the acai bowl didn’t work. Basically we just put milk and an acai smoothie mix (frozen) into a food processor and couldn’t figure out why it was so liquidy… I mean obviously blending liquid with a liquid makes more liquid, but nothing seemed to work. We tried it a few more times and tried adding frozen fruit and whole bananas to try and help thicken it up but this still didn’t help. We were starting to think that maybe that’s just how they are supposed to be… But then this weekend we went to a place called Jugos in Boston to try some real acai bowls. We were skeptical because ours hadn’t been working. But low and behold they were amazing! They had all sorts of fun ingredients blended into them (including one we didn’t try with kale and spinach). We tried one with cashews blended in and loved it, so we decided to try that in our next attempt. Somehow with the cashews and a mixture of flaxseed and granola, the consistency was a bit thicker and the taste was delicious!photo

Ok, it could be prettier, but this was our first shot. We’ll perfect them and post more, but we wanted to post this because it was easier than we thought as soon as we had some basic ingredients to thicken up our acai soup from before.

Here’s what we used:

serves 1

1 frozen acai smoothie mix, we used Sambazon. They have both sweetened and unsweetened. (We used unsweetened — purchased from Whole Foods)

1 banana

8-10 chopped strawberries

1/2 cup milk of choice (we used So Delicious Coconut Milk, you can also use greek yogurt)

1/3 cup cashews

1/3 cup Kashi Go Lean Crisp Cinnamon Crumble cereal

1/2 Tbl ground flax seed (you can omit if you don’t want this, or sub with anything like it, chia, etc)

*we would have used protein powder as well to thicken it but we didn’t have any

Toppings: banana slices, strawberry slices, blueberries, any other fruit, extra cereal or granola, more cashews or other nuts, coconut flakes. Go wild!

photo 1Here’s what we did with a Magic Bullet:

1) Blend the banana, strawberries, or any other fruit you want, with milk until almost smooth. Remove from blender.

2) Run the frozen acai smoothie mix under water for a few seconds until it melts enough to break it into chunks (don’t melt it all the way). Add the acai smoothie mix to the blender with a few spoonfuls of the fruit/milk mixture for more liquid. Blend until smooth.

3) Add flax, cashews, and cereal to the blender and add back the fruit/milk mix. At this step everything should be in the blender. If it doesn’t all fit, do it in chunks.

4) Pour mix into a bowl and top with anything you want! We topped ours with banana, strawberries, cashew butter and some more granola!

Give this recipe a try and comment what you topped yours with or any other suggestions on what to add to the mixture!

Get to know us – 25 question tag

Hello again! We thought it would be fun to each take a get to know me quiz so people can start to see who we are a bit more. We took this quiz last night while watching Mad Men – a new obsession. Rose was eating her popcorn and Haley had some ice cream. It was quite fun and simple, you should try it out! Without further ado here are our answers to the get to know me tag.

1. Do you have a middle name?

HD: Yes – McIntire

RH: Yes, but I’m not telling!

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

HD: Science until I had to take physics, then I would say art.

RH: Well I was a psychology/neuroscience major in college so that, but in high school and before I liked math.

3. What’s your favorite drink?

HD: Tea in the morning and wine at night.

RH: Tea… maybe lame but I love it (and wine – esp. rose for summer!) but for non alcoholic = tea.

4. What’s your favorite song at the moment?

HD: I think this might be old but I recently discovered it, The Line by Phish or Budapest by George Ezra.

RH: Well it definitely changes often! I like to be able to sing to it and I like it catchy! But I’d probably say either All the way by Timeflies or Hold on I’m coming home or stay alive or thunder clatter. Ask me again in 2 weeks and I’ll have a new one!

5. What would you name your children?

HD: I’ve always liked the name Lily for a girl and more recently Arden. Boy names are a bit harder though. I’m not sure I will really know until I am actually pregnant though.
